You know the “whatever you hold in your mind tends to occur in your life if you want different you just have to change you mind” theory, I strongly disagree with it, very strongly.

+Cinnamon Cake Things within our control include our judgments, intentions, desires, and aversions—an internal world of mind governed by our own volition. But everything else about us—our body, possessions, relationships, wealth, fame, reputation—depends on factors largely beyond our control. Cause and effect governs the external world. Confusing the internal world of our mind, over which we have control, with the external world, which we can only influence but not control, causes most suffering.

To make matters worse, we often assume that external objects and circumstances are the most valuable things in life. And we mistakenly believe that happiness is found outside of ourselves. Then, when the external world doesn’t meet our expectations, we experience grief, fear, envy, desire, and anxiety.

+F Kaskar Does anyone truly have control over anything? Or is every decision just a product of a combination of factors, internal and external combined?

I personally believe we have very little control over the things that happen. People say work hard and you’ll achieve it but people work hard their whole lives only to retire with nothing and on the other side of the spectrum, 17-year-olds play video games, upload them onto youtube and a year down the line they find themselves with a million in the bank. IMO the harsh reality is that life is misery and unfair for the majority. From the second we are born we have no control over anything, whether we are born male or female, born into poverty or wealth, what creed, colour, nationality, religion, what we look like we don’t control anything. And to truly control something we should be able to change the outcome but in life once a period of time has passed we are unable to go back and alter our actions during that period…sorry my response isn’t very structured I’m walking home right now lol.

+F Kaskar It’s ok, don’t worry about it lol. I think, above all, life is unpredictable. You could’ve been building something for 20 years, and in a single second it can all come crashing down. In the end life is whatever you make of it, whatever you perceive it to be.

In a sense, I agree with you, if we focus on not getting what we want but wanting what we get, then life is what we make it. However, I can’t bring myself to perceive the life I have as a happy life I want a lot more and the reality of it is that just by changing my mindset, holding what I want in my mind, and acting different than I have been acting is not enough to change my future. Just think about independent artists. One artist will release one song, for some reason that song will blow up and lead to a series of life-changing events for that artist, all this time there would have been another artist that was consistently producing better music than the first but none of his/her songs blew up on the scale as the Artist A. It’s just the luck of the draw. We can only do something and hope for the best, we have no control over outcomes and nothing seems more ridiculous to me than the universe giving us our hearts desires.
